Arsenal set to lose Alexandre Lacasette for free next summer: Newcastle interested in French striker

Alexandre Lacazette is out of contract with Arsenal at the end of the season and there are no talks ongoing to renew the striker.

However, the player’s talents cannot be called into question as a host of suitors are lined up to take the French striker off Arsenal’s hands, including the newly-acquired Premier League club, Newcastle United.

The Sun claims that the Magpies are keeping close tabs on the situation as the striker’s salary demands prevent Arsenal from going into renewal talks with him.

Under his current deal, Lacazette earns £200,000 per week at Arsenal. However, Newcastle United will have to battle AC Milan, Atletico Madrid and Marseille for the Frenchman’s signature if a deal isn’t reached with Arsenal soon.

Newcastle looking to go big in January 2022 transfer window

The Magpies have been linked with a lot of players since the takeover of the club by the Saudi Arabia-backed investment consortium, led by the Saudi Public Investment Fund, in October.

The club has sanctioned a £50 million transfer budget for January, and have made Tottenham’s Harry Winks their prime target for the transfer window, according to reports.

Juventus’ versatile 23-year-old American, Weston McKennie is also a potential target for Newcastle United in January. The versatile midfielder has been offered to Tottenham, but the Bianconeri could be open to a loan for the player in January, and Newcastle is ready to swoop in if the opportunity comes knocking.

Alexandre Lacazette is the latest player on their radar, especially with Arsenal’s reluctance to discuss a new deal for the 30-year-old striker who now occupies a squad role.

Meanwhile Arsenal boss, Mikel Arteta, has returned the Frenchman to the starting line-up in the past three games and he has played very well.

Speaking on the striker’s contract situation, the Arsenal manager said: “I am really happy with what Laca is doing at the moment. But we are not going to be talking about new contracts until the end of the season.”

Gunners eyeing German wonder kid as Alexandre Lacazette replacement

Karim Adeyemi is the name on everybody’s lips right now in the football world. He has seen a host of suitors from all across Europe, most notably Barcelona whose interest in the 19-year-old striker has reportedly gone beyond scouting.

https://twitter.com/pedrogva6/status/1460679764092628997

Arsenal is now reported to be eyeing up a deal for the young German who they see as the perfect replacement for the 30-year-old Lacazette. The new German international, who is currently contracted to Red Bull Salzburg in Austria, has enjoyed a magnificent start to the season.

He has scored 11 goals in 14 Austrian Bundesliga games and has also scored four goals in six games in the Champions League for Salzburg (qualifier layoffs and group stages).

Harald Lurzerg, president of Red Bull Salzburg admitted to Bild that Adeyemi will probably move on next summer, and Arsenal is keen on landing the 19-year-old.

Messi, Ronaldo, Lewandowski headline the FIFA best nominee list: Manchester United star missing

The 11-man shortlist for the FIFA Best Men’s player of the year award has been released, and the usual suspects are the headliners.

Lionel Messi, Robert Lewandowski, Cristiano Ronaldo lead the nominations, with Kevin De Bruyne, Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Mohammed Salah the other expected names on the list.

The rest of the 11-man shortlist sees N’Golo Kante, Erling Haaland, Jorginho and Karim Benzema replace Sadio Mane, Sergio Ramos, Virgil Van Dijk and Thiago Alcantara from last year’s nominees’ list.

Robert Lewandowski beat eight of the current nominees to the award last year won the award last year, with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi coming second and third in the polls. He returns alongside Messi and Ronaldo to battle for the title of The Best men’s player of 2021 after a blistering year with the German Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich.

However, the most notable absence from the 2021 nominees list is Bruno Fernandes of Manchester United and Portugal, whose brilliant season individually saw him earn a Ballon D’Or nomination slot for 2021.

Bruno Fernandes was key to Manchester United’s second-place finish in the Premier League last season, and also the major driving force behind their charge to the Europa League title, which United, unfortunately, lost out on after an intense penalty shootout.

Bruno Fernandes the shining light in a dull Manchester United side.

The Portuguese midfielder has started the 2021/22 season on a good note as well for both Manchester United and Portugal, picking off from where he left off last season.

He ended the 2020/21 Premier League season in the top three for goals, assists, and chances created. He was also United’s main attacking threat in the Europ League, scoring five goals and providing four assists as they reached the final of the competition.

This season, he has picked up where he left off leads the chance creation stats at Manchester United and is currently the biggest attacking threat in the Champions League.

https://twitter.com/goal/status/1462874764612194310?t=K_nvhUbV1_FbTQByzVs36w&s=08

He also played a key role in Portugal’s run-up to the qualifier playoffs for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar by creating the most chances for Portugal.

https://twitter.com/FernandesZone/status/1461332440291721223?t=F2lzaN-GoS16Bn5CJQFmjA&s=08

However, he can take solace in his nomination for the 2021 Ballon D’Or as an acknowledgement of his strong season.

“Of course, as a kid, you dream to be in the middle of the best,” Fernandes told Manchester United’s official website (via Eurosport)

“For me, being nominated for the Ballon d’Or, even if I know I will not win it, makes me feel proud, and for everyone who has been on this long journey [with me]. I’m just really happy for that.”

Other nominees for The Best FIFA awards

Jurgen Klopp misses out on this year’s nominees for The Best men’s coach, but the award will be going to either one of Pep Guardiola (Manchester City), Hansi Flick (Bayern Munich/Germany), Lionel Scaloni (Argentina), Antonio Conte (Inter Milan/Tottenham), Thomas Tuchel (Chelsea), Roberto Mancini (Italy) or Diego Simeone (Atletico De Madrid).

Alisson Becker will battle it out with Gianluigi Donnarumma, Edouard Mendy, Manuel Neuer and Kasper Schmeichel for The Best Men’s Goalkeeper.

A public vote will run until 11:59 PM CET on December 10, after which three finalists in each category will be announced ahead of the ceremony on January 17.

Zinedine Zidane turns down Manchester United job

Zinedine Zidane has reportedly turned down the latest advances from Manchester United following the sack of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, citing unpreparedness as his reason.

Zidane, alongside Mauricio Pochettino, Brendan Rodgers and Erik Ten Hag, has been a leading candidate for the United job even while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was at the wheel.

The Glazers are reported to have sanctioned the move for Zidane immediately after Solskjaer’s sack was made official, but the Frenchman’s unwillingness to move his life to England has put a roadblock between him and United. It is also reported that his wife isn’t too keen on the move to England.

Mauricio Pochettino could be key to Zidane’s return to management

Earlier reports claim that Zidane will only come out of his sabbatical earlier than planned if the France national team or the PSG job becomes available anytime soon.

TalkSPORT reports that Sir Alex Ferguson is leading the charge to bring current PSG boss Mauricio Pochettino to Old Trafford, while the club’s management is leaning more towards Zidane.

Pochettino is under contract with PSG until 2023. While the Argentine manager has played down the Manchester United talks, a positive response from him could see the three-time UEFA Champions League-winning manager back in action.

At PSG, Zidane will be managing his former captain at Real Madrid, Sergio Ramos, Kylian Mbappe, who he had tried to get for Real Madrid during his time as manager, and Lionel Messi, who he battled for four years across two stints in the El Clasico rivalry.

United should have never appointed Solskjaer, says Jamie Redknapp

Meanwhile, Jamie Redknapp has slammed Manchester United for appointing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the first place, likening the sack of the Norwegian to “shooting Bambi.”

Solskjaer’s impressive run of eight straight wins as caretaker boss after the sack of José Mourinho in the 2018/19 season earned him a contract which later turned into three-and-a-half seasons as United manager.

Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp came for United’s jugular after the sack was made official. “This hasn’t crept up on Man United, I’ve seen this for a long while,” he said.

“When you look at what Liverpool have got – Klopp, Man City – Guardiola, Chelsea – Tuchel, and you’ve got a manager that’s managed at Molde and Cardiff – at one of the biggest clubs in the world, it isn’t right.

“You’re almost fighting with one hand behind your back in the big occasions and I’ve never really felt he is the right fit.

“I said at the time, one day it’s going to be like shooting Bambi and that’s what it feels like. This should have happened weeks ago.”

Alex-Oxlade Chamberlain comments on recent gametime at Liverpool

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain played in his third consecutive match as a starter for Liverpool as they brushed aside his former club Arsenal by four goals to none on game week 12 of the Premier League 2021/22 season.

He played a decent game and also contributed to the second goal for Liverpool scored by Diogo Jota. His pressing led to a mistake by Arsenal’s Nuno Tavares which the Portuguese striker pounced on to score from. He was taken off after 76 minutes, to applause from Liverpool and Arsenal fans.

It is an unusual site to see the injury-prone midfielder grab consecutive minutes for the club but he appears to be benefitting from a packed treatment table for the Reds at the moment.

Speaking after the game, the English midfielder, who is only getting this much game time because of injuries to key players, expressed a desire to keep fighting for a starting shirt in Jurgen Klopp’s super competitive line-up.

“I want to play football, I want to play as much as I can,” Oxlade-Chamberlain told the club’s official website. “Whenever you get chances it’s up to you to put in a good performance and help the team to win – and that’s the only way you keep getting games.

“I’ve been lucky enough to get those opportunities recently, I’ve kept my head down, I’ve worked hard for them, made sure I was ready when the time came.”

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain not fazed by other title contenders

The 28-year-old was asked about how Liverpool see the challenge posed by Chelsea and Manchester City, who are both first and second on the Premier League table.

“You don’t want to focus too much on what’s going on around you, but of course you can’t be naive enough not to look at the situation and where you stand,” Oxlade-Chamberlain said to the club’s website.

“If your competitors go and get a good result, get three points, it’s then over to you to go and respond and do the same thing. I don’t know if it’s added pressure but it just makes it more real what exactly the job and the task ahead is.”

Players and fans got motivated by Klopp and Arteta clash, claims Oxlade-Chamberlain

“It was hard to not notice that,” Oxlade-Chamberlain said. “[But] our job is to keep focused on what’s happening on the pitch. The crowd picked up and benefited from that energy, maybe that was the turning point in terms of energy and atmosphere.

“I’ve been the away side at Anfield and it makes things tougher. On this side, it helps you. We stayed focused and got on with the job in hand it was a good performance and we saw the game out well.”

Ole Solskjaer speaks after Manchester United sack

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has spoken for the first time after being fired from the Manchester United managerial role on Sunday, 21 November 2021.

Despite heated and almost violent calls by fans for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be axed from the managerial position, there has been an outpouring of goodwill towards the Norwegian manager on social media.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge of the club in the 2018/19 season, stabled a sinking ship and turned the club into a fearsome team. But in the latter days of his time as manager, the team looked out of its depth against teams they would usually run over and teams they would usually have a fierce battle with.

The Norwegian sat down with MUTV for an emotional final interview, where he spoke on his time at the club, his hopes for the future of the club and his plans for his future.

“[I’m] Very, very proud [of my time at the club],” Solskjaer said to MUTV. “Of course, it’s one of those things you dream of in your life. When you’ve been a player, when you’ve been a reserve team coach, the next job then, the only dream and the only thing you haven’t done is to manage the club, and I have now.”

Solskjaer promises to back the new manager

“I don’t want to pre-empt anything but the two times I’ve left Molde, they’ve won the league the year after, so all the best to whoever takes over – that’s the expectation!” Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said after expressing his gratitude for the time he spent as head coach.

He also promised to throw his weight behind whoever replaces him as the boss and also come back if he’s needed. “I’ll spend some time with my family [in Norway],” the Norwegian says. “Then, I’ll watch the team of course and hopefully, the next manager comes in and I want to support him. I want him to be successful, hopefully, I’ve laid the foundations for that to happen,” he added.

Four new big names lined up as potential Solskjaer replacements

Before Manchester United and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer parted ways, there have been a ton of rumours as to who could replace the 48-year-old as Manchester United manager.

Sky Sports reports that former Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino is the club management’s preferred candidate. Per Sky Sports, Ajax’s Erik Ten Hag is the second choice if Pochettino cannot be convinced to leave his current position at PSG.

Other names that have been mentioned in relation to the Manchester United job are Zinedine Zidane, Brendan Rodgers, and Ralf Rangnick. Other names that have come up since the sacking of Solskjaer are Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui, Brighton and Hove Albion’s Graham Potter, Al Rayyan of Qatar’s Laurent Blanc, and Spain’s Luis Enrique.

However, Micheal Carrick, once part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s coaching staff in his time at the club, will train the team until the club’s management decide on a replacement for the Norwegian.

Mauricio Pochettino opens up about tough PSG job

Paris Saint-Germain manager, Mauricio Pochettino, has finally opened up about the pressure he feels managing the superstar in the Paris-based team.

The Argentine manager, in an emotional interview with Mail Sport (via Daily Mail) on November 17, 2021, spoke about life as the manager of the world’s current Galacticos and how the journey has been so far since he took over the reins in the middle of last season.

Mauricio Pochettino replaced current Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel at PSG in January 2021. He has since won two domestic trophies in 11 months as well as guided the club to a semi-final place in last season’s UEFA Champions League.

However, the 49-year-old’s time with the club has been subject to scrutiny due to some dull performances from his star-studded side.

However, Pochettino admits that winning all the time is expected because of the players at his disposal, but the management side of things is not easy in any way.

“When you have in your hands this type of player, it is not easy,” Pochettino told Mail Sport about the backlash received from fans and pundits after substituting Lionel Messi in PSG’s 2-1 win over Lille earlier in the season. “For us [his coaching staff], we feel the same way as when the name is different.

“When you need to make some decision to affect the player, I don’t care [if] he is a big name or a player that is at the start of his career. Of course, after, the consequence of the media or this type of thing is completely different. I understand.

“Sometimes you have to [make] some decisions that maybe make people not happy. Or maybe people are expecting different things. But that is our job. When you decide to be a coach, a manager, you know that this type of thing will arrive. But for us, it is an amazing challenge.”

Pochettino still unhappy about the circumstances of his exit from Tottenham

Mauricio Pochettino was dismissed from the Tottenham Hotspur job two years ago on November 17. The date is still etched in Mauricio Pochettino’s memory, as he spoke with emotion in the interview about the circumstances surrounding his exit from the club.

“It’s really painful,” Pochettino told Mail Sport. “Five-and-a-half years. It was an amazing journey. We could not deliver a trophy for the fans, for the club — a trophy that the players deserve, the club deserves, our president, Daniel (Levy), and of course the fans.

“All of us worked so hard to try to deliver this and we didn’t achieve [it].”

The Argentine, who still lives and operates out of a hotel in Paris 11 months into his time as PSG manager, is without his family — his wife Karina and son Maurizio — who still live in their family home in North London. This has made his time in Paris a little harder.

Lionel Messi finally opens his account in Ligue 1

Pochettino can now have hope of a better time at PSG after Lionel Messi finally opened his account in Ligue 1 against Nantes on matchday 14 of the 2021/22 season.

Lionel Messi played a key role in helping 10-man PSG survive a late onslaught from Nantes who smelled blood following the dismissal of Keylor Navas . Pochettino cut a happy figure after the game.

“He is a great champion, the best player in the world; so he knows how to come through difficult spells. He has the patience, and it’s good that he scored,” Pochettino said in his post-match press conference.

Arteta reacts after Arsenal’s drubbing at Anfield

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal has seen their unbeaten run come to an end after just 10 games, thanks to a 4-0 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield.

Arsenal went into the game high on confidence after keeping five clean sheets and winning six of their last 10 matches, conceding only four goals. The trip to Anfield would’ve been a big indication of a season turnaround for the club, but Liverpool would prove too much to handle.

https://twitter.com/jamesbenge/status/1462141202954870784?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

Speaking to Arsenal media (via Arsenal.com) after the match, Mikel Arteta expressed disappointment in the result and of how the pressure from the intimidating Anfield atmosphere got to his team.

“We competed really well in the first half – they had their moments, we had our moments. We were really compact and used the ball in the right way to create some situations. We had a goal disallowed and then we conceded a goal from a set-play.

“In the second half, when we had to build some momentum and start to grow [into] the match, we threw it away in the first 15 to 20 minutes. We gave every ball away in very dangerous areas. We had [them under] no pressure. They punished us, we lost control of the game and they had all the momentum.”

Touchline fracas with Klopp didn’t affect game, says Arteta

In the first half of the game, Mikel Arteta and Jurgen Klopp had a bust-up on the touchline which lasted a few minutes, creating even more tension for the high-profile game.

Both managers clashed over Arteta’s protests following an elbow by Liverpool forward Sadio Mane on Arsenal fullback Takehiro Tomiyasu in the first half.

Only the fourth official stood between both managers as they angrily exchanged words, almost coming face to face with each other until the intervention of both teams’ coaching staff.

Speaking on the situation to Arsenal media, Arteta said: “He was trying to defend his side, I was trying to defend mine and that’s it. I think the atmosphere was incredible right from the beginning, so that’s it.”

https://twitter.com/SkySportsPL/status/1462120007740137477?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1462120007740137477%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-4133106573852360314.ampproject.net%2F2111060251009%2Fframe.html

Jurgen Klopp also spoke on the issue. “I am really sick of these situations, where everybody tries to go for Sadio in these moments. He is a physical player, obviously, he does make hard fouls,” the Liverpool boss told Sky Sports after the match.

“We had to take Sadio off against Atletico [Madrid in the Champions League] because they wanted him to get a yellow card. “The referee did really well in that situation – I deserved a yellow card. It was not OK and that is what I said. It just happened at that moment.”

Arteta wants Arsenal to bounce back against Newcastle

Anfield is not a happy hunting ground for many teams in the Premier League, including the Gunners. The result was not a strange one. However, the margins were unexpected following Arsenal’s form going into the game.

Arteta acknowledged this fact to Arsenal media. “Here it doesn’t matter whether you play young or senior players – I’ve seen all types of players suffer [in] this ground. When you go 2-0 or 3-0 down, it’s very difficult and we suffered.

“It’s a learning process – today there are a lot of things that we should take but the most important one after a result like that is the next one, and to forget about this one.

Arteta also acknowledged that Arsenal will have to bounce back against struggling Newcastle in their next Premier League game. “That’s what big and good teams do, and that’s what we have to do.

“On Monday, we’ll start again, review the match, the things that we should have done better and understand the reason why we lost it. Then we’ll correct it and focus completely on Newcastle.”

Manchester United part ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Manchester United have decided to part ways with Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer after three-and-a-half seasons at the helm of the club.

The 48-year-old Norwegian took over as United head coach during the 2018/19 season as the caretaker manager following the club’s dismissal of José Mourinho. A strong start to his career which saw a change in fortunes for the club earned him the role on a permanent basis that same season.

He would go on to lead the club to sixth, third and runners-up places in the Premier League, as well as the Europa League final and three semi-finals in all competitions during his time at Old Trafford.

However, a lack of direction from the Red Devils has seen the Norwegian fall out of favour among fans and key figures within and outside the club. Fans would be seen on social media constantly trending the hashtag #OleOut every matchday for the better part of 2021.

The 4-1 loss to struggling newcomers Watford FC in the Premier League matchday 13 of the 2021/22 season was the straw that broke the camel’s back, as the club’s management entered into a meeting that lasted for over five hours to discuss the manager’s terms of exit.

https://twitter.com/DuncanCastles/status/1462184789230956548?t=z27SOYxcYMl8l6aFVyOFzA&s=08

Solskjaer to receive huge payout upon dismissal

As reported by The Times, the Glazers Family group managing director, Richard Arnold, was instructed to go into negotiations with Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer on his severance package to facilitate a smooth exit from the club.

The report states that Manchester United will have to part ways with £7.5 million to end the Norwegian’s tenure at the club. The 48-year-old will be leaving the club after five defeats in seven games and 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea.

Watford vs Manchester United: An opportunity missed by Solskjaer

The trip to Vicarage Road was a trip that Manchester United fans looked forward to, because of Watford’s abysmal goalscoring record. That optimism was dashed after the first half, as Manchester United found themselves 2-0 down going into the break.

Donny van de Beek, a player much maligned by Solskjaer, was the one to get United’s only goal which halved the deficit, until club captain Harry Maguire saw a second yellow for a silly tackle, leading to United’s capitulation.

David De Gea, who saved United on multiple occasions during the game to prevent the scoreline from being even more embarrassing, betrayed what fans believe to be the true feelings of players at the club after the match.

“There’s not much to say – it was embarrassing to see United play like we did today,” a visibly disappointed David De Gea said in his post-match interview.

“It was hard to watch the team playing today – it was nightmare after nightmare. It’s not acceptable. We are trying to give our best and fight for the team but for sure something is very wrong. You can see in the games – it’s very low level, very poor. Sorry to the fans, once again.

“It’s been bad for a long time and we have got to do better.”

Darren Fletcher being lined up for caretaker role

The meeting to discuss Solskjaer’s dismissal from the club also discussed potential replacements, according to the reports. Zinedine Zidane remains the prime candidate for Manchester United’s hierarchy despite turning down the job earlier in the season, and moves have begun to further persuade the Frenchman to change his mind.

In the meantime, Darren Fletcher, technical director of the club, is to take over as caretaker manager until the club can find a new manager, according to The Telegraph. The 37-year-old could begin his role as caretaker boss as early as United’s UEFA Champions League match against Spanish side Villareal.

Liverpool thump Arsenal to return to winning ways

Arsenal were brought back to earth by a rampaging Liverpool after an unbeaten streak of 10 games following a poor start to the 2021/22 season.

Liverpool scored four goals to which Mikel Arteta’s side had no reply. The Merseyside team were coming from a defeat to another London side, West Ham United, which ended their 25-match unbeaten streak that spanned seven months.

Their response to the 3-2 defeat at the Hammers stadium was emphatic enough for all other title contenders and crushing for the Gunners who had just hit a good run of form. The loss, however, is only Arsenal’s fourth loss in 21 games, which isn’t a particularly bad record for the Gunners and their embattled manager, Mikel Arteta.

Liverpool forwards remain the deadliest in the league

After a shoddy half-hour of football from both sides, Liverpool finally opened the scoring with a headed goal from Sadio Mane, scored from another brilliant Trent Alexander-Arnold delivery. It was a crushing goal for Arsenal’s goalkeeper, Aaron Ramsdale, who had been in fine form until that point in the game.

The second half saw Liverpool run riot at Anfield, as wave after wave of attack kept flowing from the Merseysiders. Goals from Liverpool’s other forwards, Digo Jota, Mohammed Salah, and Takumi Minamino who came on for Diogo Jota after he picked up a knock, were the nail on Arsenal’s coffin at Anfield.

The goals from Liverpool’s forwards –  with the exception of Takumi Minamino who hasn’t seen much action this season – took their total tally to 30 goals in all competitions this season.

https://twitter.com/AKS/status/1462141539916947459?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

However, with the African Cup of Nations coming up in January, Liverpool will be losing both Sadio Mane and Mohammed Salah for at least a month. Jurgen Klopp will have to shore up his attack so that his team do not miss the attacking threat from both superstars.

Arsenal fall to mighty Reds as expected

Anfield has not been a happy hunting ground for the gunners in the past few seasons and not many people expected a different result. However, the scoreline is sure to take all fans by surprise, seeing how well Arsenal have defended during their 10-game unbeaten run.

The game got very intense at one point in the first half as both managers had a go at each other and had to be separated by members of their coaching staff. That fire died down, however, as Jurgen Klopp’s side came out guns blazing after the halftime break.

https://twitter.com/jamesbenge/status/1462141202954870784?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Etweet

Arsenal will have another opportunity to regain their confidence as they host struggling Newcastle United in the next Premier League game week, but the players and coaching staff will have to deal with Arsenal’s impatient fans who see this loss as an indictment of the club’s average season.

Manchester United set their sights on Barcelona midfielder

Manchester United have identified Frenkie De Jong as another replacement for Paul Pogba if the Frenchman leaves Old Trafford this summer or anytime in the near future, reports The Independent, via Metro UK.

The report claims that new Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez hasn’t been impressed by Frenkie De Jong and sees La Masia stars Pablo ‘Gavi’ Gavira and Nicolás ‘Nico’ Gonzalez as more fitting for his new Barcelona project.

Manchester United look set to lose the World Cup winner on a free this summer if they cannot agree on a new deal with him. It is also reported that the contract talks are progressing slowly because Paul Pogba is looking for an increase in wages, one which will see him overtake Cristiano Ronaldo as the highest-paid Premier League player.

De Jong joins Valverde and Rice on Manchester United’s radar

United boss Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer has been hoping to land West Ham midfield maestro Declan Rice for the better part of two seasons now, leading to the Hammers slapping a £100 million price tag on the young Englishman.

Real Madrid’s Federico Valverde has also emerged as a target in recent times for the club in case they’re not able to secure a new deal with Paul Pogba. Per the latest reports, Barcelona could be open to offloading Frenkie De Jong as the club, still in serious financial crisis, looks to lower its wage bill.

De Jong has only shone in flashes since joining the Catalan side for £65m from Ajax Amsterdam back in 2019 and still has five years left on his contract. The Dutchman is also linked to Manchester City, with Pep Guardiola being a long time admirer of the 24-year-old’s talents on and off the ball.

Frenkie De Jong still holds the confidence of fans and Xavi

Frenkie De Jong is a player that many would consider untouchable at Barcelona if not for the financial troubles the club is currently going through. New manager, Xavi, has also praised De Jong in the past, saying that the 24-year-old Dutchman is a player who can “mark a new era at Barcelona”.

Barcelona fans share the same sentiment as they have been quick to raise concerns all over social media as to why one of the club’s most consistent performers in recent years should be subject to transfer rumours.

However, with other reports from Spain and Barcelona which shows that Xavi is willing to give everyone on the team a clean slate, fans are hopeful that the flashes of brilliance seen from De Jong will become more commonplace as the Dutchman’s talents cannot be called to question.

Speaking ahead of his first match as Barcelona coach, the game with Espanyol in LaLiga, Xavi said about Frenkie De Jong: “Frenkie has to be really important for us, absolutely, he has to make the difference. He has to score goals, he has to be important in attack and defence.

“He can help us at many points and he has to make a difference.”
